21CO’s Purpose for BEing

By Kim Commins-Tzoumakas | April 12, 2019

purpose for being

“The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.”

-Mark Twain

To be genuinely happy and fulfilled in any job is to have a true understanding of purpose – What are you here to do? More importantly, Why?

To me, working in cancer care is the epitome of working with a clear sense of purpose. It’s a special feeling to be part of our Dream Team that is dedicated to fight for our patients like an army and care for them like a family. There is no more powerful motivator in the world.

It is that understanding, that sense of purpose, that is at the center of everything we do at 21st Century Oncology. We empower and encourage patients to not only be cancer survivors, but to be cancer thrivers. And the best way to do that is by allowing our physicians to do what they spent years in medical school and their residencies to do: take care of patients.

“What’s most fulfilling are the patients that we have the privilege to care for. The connection we get with the patients, being able to walk with the patient on this journey,” Dr. Tom Boike, a 21st Century Oncologist, said. “And then we get to see them move on and go back to doing the things that they love.”

So, from an organizational standpoint, we’ve structured 21CO to do just that. We removed administrative duties from our doctors’ plates entirely. Instead of spending hours of their day and week going through paperwork and updating records, 21CO physicians focus 100% of their time with patients, performing research, or participating in clinical trials. Not only can they see more patients, more quickly, more often, they get to spend better quality time with those patients, as well.

We even took that mentality one step further and changed the name of our administrative offices in Florida from our “headquarters” to our “support center” – because that more accurately describes how we view our roles as leaders and administrators within the company. What we are here to do, and more importantly, Why.

“The majority of our day is focused on patients. Any free time we have, we can focus on clinical research and the advancement of cancer care,” said Dr. Frank Vicini, a 21st Century Radiation Oncologist. “There is a larger organization looking out for people, providing the standardization of treatment, the best clinical trials available, getting the best equipment, recruiting the very best physicians and caregivers.”

That’s really what cancer care is about, isn’t it? Putting patients first and foremost, knowing they are in the caring hands of an expert who truly cares for them and their treatment.

The leaders of our team, and more than 2,500 other Dream Team members, work hard to make our doctors’ jobs easier – which, in turn, gives our patients the best possible experience. By putting all hands on deck to fully support our doctors, our patients get the very best support and quality of care they need along their journey. That’s our reason for being.
