Taking Care of America’s Heroes: Four Key Takeaways

February 19, 2014

On Wednesday, December 4, 2013, Dr. Jeffrey Forman of 21st Century Oncology participated in a special event in Troy, Michigan called “Taking Care of America’s Heroes.”

Often, the military heroes of the US can feel lost in a medical system that feels cumbersome and confusing. In order to alleviate the confusion and frustration, Dr. Forman spoke during a complimentary lecture on prostate health, prostate cancer treatments, and information to aid veterans as they work through the various layers and offices of the VA system for non-VA care.

The event was warmly received and there were several helpful tips and insights that were provided along the way. Due to a lot of inquiries about the event, here are the key takeaways that were discussed during the lecture:

  1. Know your options when it comes to prostate screening and early detection. Have a conversation with your doctor and see if it makes sense for you to initiate cancer screenings for yourself. Your doctor will help you identify your risk factors and make a decision that makes the most sense for you and your loved ones. If your doctor doesn’t adequately help you, ask another one who will truly listen to you.
  2. Obtaining multiple opinions is never a bad idea. While your doctor may know you pretty well, there is no harm in seeking another opinion and make sure that you have all the information you need, especially when there are hard decisions to make. Find out what your options are for obtaining additional opinions and ask exhaustive questions until you’re comfortable with what you need to know and whom you can go to for help and information.
  3. The decisions about your health are the most important ones you’ll ever make. So treat them with care. Get all the information you can on health choices, find out what all of your treatment options are, and don’t stop asking questions. Without all the information at your disposal you won’t be able to make the best choice possible for you and your future.
  4. If you’re confused, ask for help. As a staunch supporter of veterans, 21st Century Oncology is committed to aiding veterans as they work through the various levels of VA paperwork, requirements and protocols. If you are looking at radiation therapy options and non-VA care, reach out to 21st Century Oncology for more information. They can point you in the right direction.

Representatives of the event all felt that the time was well spent simultaneously educating and celebrating a group of American heroes who risked everything to keep our society safe and protected.
