7 Things to Keep in Mind When You Have Cancer

Apple a Day Blog | March 08, 2017

Having a positive mindset may be one of the most beneficial things you can do for yourself after a cancer diagnosis. If you’ve been diagnosed with cancer, always remember these 7 things:

  1. You’re not alone.  Look around and you will notice a personal cheering squad in your network of family and friends. Your family and friends will be there to support and comfort you --- lean on them when you need to.

  2. Stay positive by staying busy. The more time you spend working on projects, walking your dog, or spending time with your family, the less time you will have to think negative thoughts.

  3. It’s ok to laugh! The happier you are and the lighter you make things seem, the better mindset you will have on a daily basis.

  4. Pick up some new hobbies. Finding new things in your life to enjoy can help you look at things from a different perspective. Experiencing new things can also make you more confident in your ability to stay strong.

  5. Talk it out.  Sometimes it helps to talk to someone about what you’re going through and how you feel. Allowing yourself to feel every emotion is important to the healing process.

  6. Be confident in who you are. Don’t let cancer take away your identity. Fight back and know that you are still the same person you were before the diagnosis.

  7. Stop googling. Everyone is going to do research on their diagnosis, but keep in mind that every case is different, and your clinical staff can offer you better, more personalized information. Always remember the support and trust you have from the ones you love, and know that you CAN beat cancer.

Going through emotional ups and downs during treatment is natural; having the right attitude and mindset will only help you throughout your cancer treatment.
