Las Vegas Woman’s Story Emphasizes the Importance of Early Breast Cancer Detection

September 23, 2016

LAS VEGAS – September 23, 2016 – Nancy Ghilardi is no stranger to breast cancer. Her mother passed away from the disease, and her daughter is a nine-year survivor. So when she detected a bruise on her breast that didn’t heal, Ghilardi went straight to the doctor.

“Deep in my heart, I knew it wasn’t good, and time really just stood still. I knew my life was about to drastically change,” said Ghilardi.

The 77-year-old was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC), the most common form of breast cancer. When caught early, patients have an 84 percent chance of survival, according to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

Ghilardi was referred to 21st Century Oncology, and placed under the care of Board Certified Radiation Oncologist Susan Reisinger, M.D.

“IDC can be treated with positive outcomes when caught early,” said Dr. Reisinger. “Because of Ms. Ghilardi’s tumor's size and that it had not yet spread to the lymph nodes, a lumpectomy was performed followed by medications to suppress estrogen, and a series of 16 radiation treatments.”

From her first visit with 21st Century Oncology, Ghilardi says knew she was in the right place.

“Cancer is a great fear. I felt very comfortable from the first moment when I walked into 21st Century Oncology. Dr. Reisinger was friendly, professional and very confident that we could handle my particular situation without a problem and that I would be fine,” Ghilardi said.

Now finished with treatment, Ghilardi is back to living a full life, and has some advice for other women going through the cancer.

“No matter what you have to keep a positive attitude. I was not going to let cancer hold me back. I think all women need to have that mindset. Just surge forward. You have to, otherwise you just feel so sorry for yourself. It accomplishes nothing,” she says.
