New Brain Cancer Treatment Now Available in Las Vegas

August 17, 2015

LAS VEGAS – Aug. 17, 2015 – A new, FDA approved treatment for glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) brain tumors called Optune™ is now available at 21st Century Oncology in Las Vegas.

Optune is a portable, non-invasive medical device that sits on the patient’s head like a swim cap and is designed for continuous use. Since its FDA certification last year, clinical results have shown it to be a nontoxic and effective treatment for GBM brain cancers that improves survival and quality of life. It is offered to patients after completing standard therapies, such as surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy, and can be used in combination with chemotherapy or other systemic therapies.

“Optune works by creating a very low energy electrical field that is concentrated around the tumor,” says Brian Lawenda, M.D., Board Certified Radiation Oncologist with 21st Century Oncology. “The field slows the division of cancer cells and disrupts their ability to divide and grow. The patient wears the pads of the device on their scalp, and they are free to go about their daily activities during treatment. These can be hidden under a scarf or hat if the patient desires.”

21st Century Oncology is the only cancer treatment center in Las Vegas offering this treatment.

Elnora Walters, 79, was diagnosed with GBM, one of the most aggressive forms of brain cancer, after being admitted to the hospital experiencing periods of memory loss.“I would realize I was some place I wasn’t supposed to be. It’s just so scary when you don’t know what’s going on but know there’s something wrong,” she says.

After completing other treatments, including surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy there is not much else to offer patients to further reduce their risk of their cancer from growing or coming back. After discussions with Dr. Lawenda, he recommended Optune.

Walters has been using Optune for five weeks and is happy with her progress so far.“I feel like it is helping. It doesn’t hurt me and it’s making me feel a lot better,” she says.

Dr. Lawenda hopes to bring this new treatment option to more patients who have been diagnosed with GBM brain tumors.

“Optune has the potential to be used for patients who previously had no other alternatives,” says Dr. Lawenda. “We look forward to offering patients this new therapy.”
