21st Century Oncology Adds New Technology to Help Protect Patients’ Hearts, Hosts Informative Lecture

February 27, 2018

FORT MYERS, Fla. – February 27, 2018 – 21st Century Oncology today announced the implementation of the AlignRT system to its Lee County cancer treatment centers. The system will particularly benefit patients being treated for left-sided breast cancer, as it can aid the radiotherapy team to protect the heart.

Radiation therapy is highly effective in fighting breast cancer. During treatment, the goal is to deliver radiation to the breast area while minimizing radiation exposure to healthy tissue.

The left breast is very close to the heart, and when cancer is in the left breast, studies show that the proximity of the heart makes radiation-induced heart disease a long-term risk related to treatment. 21st Century Oncology is working to make sure that the radiation treatment patients need to treat their cancer today will not affect the heart tomorrow.

AlignRT has been shown to help reduce radiation exposure to the heart during treatment for left-breast cancer.

The company is hosting an informative lecture event to discuss the benefits of AlignRT. The event will be held on Tuesday, March 6 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Fiddlesticks Country Club, located at 15391 Cannongate Drive in Fort Myers. The lecture is free and open to the public. Board Certified Radiation Oncologist, Arie Dosoretz, M.D., will be presenting.

“If patients have left-breast cancer, we take extra precautions to make sure that the heart receives minimal radiation exposure during treatment,” says Dr. Dosoretz. “We use a technique called Deep Inspiration Breath Hold to move the heart away from the breast during therapy. In this manner, we can treat the necessary areas to minimize the risk of long-term cancer recurrence, but also spare the heart from meaningful radiation exposure. Deep-inspiration breath-hold is a very effective technique.”

AlignRT helps make sure the patient’s heart is in the right place. Using three camera units to monitor thousands of points on the skin, AlignRT can detect any motion as patients hold their breath — side to side, up and down, forward and back and more — with sub-millimeter accuracy. If a patient moves out of position, the radiation beam is automatically turned off. The cancer is treated and the heart is protected.

AlignRT is now available at all of 21st Century Oncology’s Lee County locations.
