ESTERO, Fla. – May 3, 2017 – South Florida Surgical Oncology will be hosting a complimentary seminar about pancreatic cancer on Friday, May 19 at noon. The seminar will be held at the Healthy Life Center at Coconut Point on 23190 Fashion Dr., Suite 105 in Estero, and will focus on providing education on pancreatic cancer detection and advancements in treatment.

The lecture will provide an opportunity to get up-to-date information about pancreatic cancer and screenings and gain practical advice and answers to questions from a leading medical professional in the field of gastrointestinal cancers. Lunch will be provided.

According to the American Cancer Society, only one fifth of Americans diagnosed with pancreatic cancer survive for a full year. One likely cause is that pancreatic cancer does not cause symptoms until the disease is already in late stage. Early diagnosis and access to novel treatments can help improve outcomes.

Mark Bloomston, M.D., lead physician with South Florida Surgical Oncology and a recognized expert in pancreatic diseases, will be speaking at the event. Dr. Bloomston is credited with bringing numerous, state-of-the-art treatments to Southwest Florida, including Heated Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC), a one-step chemotherapy procedure for certain abdominal cancers.

Dr. Bloomston has authored over 180 articles and served on the NCI Neuroendocrine task force and the NCCN Hepatobiliary guidelines committee. His interests are in complex GI cancers and advanced surgical procedures, such as complex pancreas surgery, major liver surgery, biliary reconstruction, hepatic artery infusion pumps, and HIPEC. He is ranked in the top 10 percentile for patient satisfaction and is considered one of the nation’s top doctors by US News and World Report.
