Despite its name, the CyberKnife is not a knife at all. It is a non-invasive alternative to surgery for the treatment of certain tumors. It is the first system to use a robotic arm to deliver a high dosage radiation beam with microscopic precision, making it a good option for some patients with inoperable or surgically risky tumors.
Used under image-guidance or IGRT, the CyberKnife continually adjusts treatment as the patient or tumor shifts position, targeting only the tumor and leaving surrounding healthy tissue untouched. This minimizes the risk of side effects while allowing your Radiation Oncologist to prescribe a higher dosage over a shorter period of time.
CyberKnife can be used to treat small, well-defined tumors in the brain or spine with SRS or in the lungs or liver with SBRT. Patients are treated over one to five sessions, with sessions typically lasting 30-90 minutes each.
